Oh, Picture This Inspiration: Cam Archer

Cam Archer is an Oakland-based director who has produced music videos for indie artists like Emily Jane White (who I've had the pleasure of performing with), Xiu Xiu, Six Organs of Admittance, Imperial Teen and directed the feature film Wild Tigers I Have Known (produced by Gus Van Stant and IFC Films). His works is very emotional, giving the term "moving images" a profounder meaning.

I admire his work, and as a film student, am definitely taking notes from this young and talented director. Some of his work below:

Emily Jane White- Dagger

- I love the shots of her hair and neck as she turns in circles and the flashlight beaming on her pink heels, projecting circles onto the sidewalk.

- The shot of her crossing her legs while fidgeting with her ruffled skirt is beautiful.

Imperial Teen- Our Time

- This is how I get ready for a night out.

- The bright light that suddenly emerges behind him after he's let his hair down is neat.

- Hand-held shots of him dancing vs. stable shots of him singing are a great juxtaposition.

- The arm that hands him clothing, I need in my life.

Six Organs of Admittance- All You Have Left

- The blurred edges in each shot create a dreamy and ethereal feeling.

- Some shots contain saturated images of flowers in one color, while other shots are completely devoid of color.

Miso, oriental prince in the land of soup!

I figured since it's a very rainy day in San Francisco (brrrrr) that I should make some soup. Design Sponge is one of my favorite blogs and lately they have some neat recipes, like this one for Miso Soup (yum). The vibrant colors of the dish are really appealing and Miso soup is a great comfort food on a day like this!

Even one of my favorite TV shows "The Mighty Boosh" has a song about Miso Soup. Check it out:

Roses are red

Happy Valentine's Day! Hope you are full of love today!

I'm sure many of you have received lovely bouquets of flowers like those of Rose and Radish.

A co-worker received a lovely seasonal bouquet from this florist as a Valentine's present from her boyfriend. The bouquet included lilacs, red and pink tulips and a tall cherry blossom branch. It was such a neat and unusual assortment, that I had to look this place up.

Not only are their flower arrangements pretty, but the vases that they come in are meant to be re-purposed for other uses! Adorable, right?!

Definitely a fresh and eco-conscious take on the usual gift of a bouquet of roses for Valentine's day.

Speaking of roses and consciousness, I remembered today that I saw a video a year ago regarding the rose industry. Most people probably have no idea where their roses are coming from and how the people who cultivate these pretty flowers are affected.

Did you know that most of the world's roses are farmed and shipped out from Colombia? And that workers are exposed to so many chemicals that that some employers demand women workers have reproductive surgery (to snip their fallopian tubes) before being hired?

I saw the video below last year, and it has definitely changed the way that I look at Valentine's day:

I just wanted to share this video with you so that at least you are aware that every pretty rose has it's thorn and that our mass consumer holidays come at a price to some...
